V2546. MISRA. Expression resulting from the macro expansion should be surrounded by parentheses.

May 30 2019

This diagnostic rule is based on the software development guidelines developed by MISRA (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association).

The analyzer has detected a potentially incorrect macro definition. The macro and its parameters should be enclosed in parentheses.

When macro parameters or expression are not parenthesized, the intended logic may get disrupted after expanding the macro.

Here is an example of code that will trigger this warning:

#define DIV(x, y) (x / y)

This example demonstrates the use of the faulty macro:

Z = DIV(x + 1, y + 2);

Expanding the macro will result in the following expression:

Z =(x + 1 / y + 2);

To keep the intended logic, the macro definition should be rewritten as follows:

#define DIV(x,y) ((x) / (y))

This diagnostic is classified as:

  • MISRA-C-20.7
  • MISRA-CPP-16.0.6
