x86 (Intel 80x86, IA-32) is a common name for the family of microprocessors both developed and released by Intel company and processors by other producers (for example, AMD and VIA) compatible with them. The name x86 has been assigned to these microprocessors because the names of earlier microprocessor models ended with number 86: 8086, 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486. The following models were called by proper names (for example, Pentium).
Further a 64-bit architecture x64 (AMD64) with backward compatibility with x86 has been created.
